We asked American singer and songwriter, Stephanie Quayle, to describe her journey of becoming a new female country artist and why she has been wearing Lucchese boots for many years. From her lyric video of “Drinking with Dolly” to the back of her horse to performing on stage, Stephanie’s got her boots on. For her, it’s about the classic western style and fit.
Stephanie was born and raised in Bozeman, Montana. Her family had a farm raising bison, cattle, and all kinds of creatures. Stephanie got her first taste of country music from a little silver AM radio in her horse barn. Now, she lives in Nashville, Tennessee, pursuing her career as a female country artist.
How did you begin your career? And how has it progressed since?
I can’t make this up. I went on an exchange program to Switzerland my junior year of high school. It was my way of running away legally! I met a band the first month I was in town. They were looking for a lead singer to front their band, so I auditioned and got the gig. When I took the stage, that’s when I knew this would be my life. I didn’t know how; I just knew it was a must.
In 2015, I started my label and management company, and the progress and momentum are exhilarating. I have a phenomenal team whose passion is incomparable and commitment is unwavering. I just had my fifth performance at the Grand Ole Opry and performed on the same stage as Willie Nelson, so I’d say things are going well! I pinch myself a lot these days. I’m grateful beyond words for the opportunity to impact lives in a positive way through my music.

Explain the feeling of what it’s like to become a newly inducted member of CMT's Next Women of Country class of 2019?
It’s extraordinary. An honor I take very seriously. I love following in the boots of the previous NWOC, standing beside the ones in the current class and being a positive force for those that will follow in mine. The camaraderie amongst our group is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. We are out there earning our way, and we have an enormous amount of respect for one another.

How do you find inspiration as a songwriter?
Anywhere and everywhere. I consider myself a professional eavesdropper. I also study the craft; the simplicity in turning a phrase is complex and an art in our genre. There’s nothing like songwriting. It’s magic. It’s divine.
What inspired the song “Whatcha Drinkin ‘Bout”?
When the three of us [co-writers Joey Ebach and Ryland Fisher] got together to write, we were all meeting for the first time! I brought some whiskey and beer for the guys and figured either way we’d have a blast. It wasn’t until we got into the studio that we realized the magic we had created. In walks that telecaster guitar, and everything is right with the world! We watched this song happen on the road, with our fans singing along right away. As a songwriter, you live for moments like these.

Have you continued to emphasize western wear in much of your personal and professional life?
Yes. My style is all about incorporating and having some fun with western accents whether it is on stage or in photo shoots. I take pride in representing my western roots wherever the road takes me!

Tell me about your first pair of boots.
Oh man, I think I was a teeny tiny human when I slipped on my first pair... I have to ask my mom. I do remember when I bought my first pair, I was 11 or 12 and they were a turquoise, my favorite color. I needed some new boots to wear to the rodeo! I’ll never forget those boots.
What are your favorite Lucchese boots?
I recently just bought the Lily. I love this style of boot and the metallic was a must. They look great on the outside of a tight skinny pair of Wrangler jeans or a boot cut where’s there’s just a peep of sparkle.
The other favorite pair is the Milla. These are the boots featured in my lyric video of “Drinking with Dolly” I mentioned above.
