If you are from Texas, you probably know or have at least heard of Big Tex. He’s the 55-foot tall cowboy standing at the front entrance of the State Fair of Texas. Big Tex welcomes his fair guests with a friendly, “Howdyyyy Folks!” You can’t miss it!
In 2013, Lucchese partnered with the State Fair of Texas to design Big Tex's cowboy boots. To learn more about Big Tex and his Lucchese boots, check out the video below to hear what this cowboy has to say!
Tell me about yourself. Where are you from?
I am from Kerens, Texas, a small-town due east of Corsicana. I was originally built as a Santa Clause in 1949 for a Christmas celebration, but now I’m one of the world’s most famous cowboys!
When did you first debut at the State Fair of Texas?
I made my debut on Opening Day of the 1952 State Fair of Texas. This year is my 67th!
What is your favorite saying at the State Fair of Texas?
I love to welcome fairgoers with a giant, “Howdy, Folks!”
What’s your favorite food at the State Fair of Texas?
I can’t name only one, but every year I eat a funnel cake and of course a Fletcher’s corny dog.
How long have you been wearing Lucchese boots?
Since 2013, but it feels like forever.
What size are your Lucchese boots?
I wear a whopping size 96 boots.
What do you think of this year’s boot design?
Katie Sauceda did a beautiful job designing my boots this year. They really show off my Texan pride! The design is a quilt of Texas landmarks and symbols from East to West such as the Alamo and yellow rose.
What are you looking forward to for this year’s fair?
I am looking forward to seeing all of the fairgoers enjoying themselves and taking pictures with everyone!
What show or concert are you looking forward to this year?
I am looking forward to Opening Day’s concert with Rick Springfield and seeing my fellow cowboy, Billy Ray Cyrus in October.
How much did the State Fair of Texas spend purchasing you?
Only $750 back in the day – but now, I’d like to think I’m priceless!
How much of the fair can you see from Big Tex Circle?
From my view I can see the Chevy Main Stage, Esplanade, Truck Zone, and Lone Star Blvd.
Why did the fair officials decide that “Tex” was the most appropriate symbol to adopt?
Well, everything’s bigger in Texas – including me, Big Tex!
Anything else you’d like us to know about or share.
I am 55 feet tall and known as the world’s tallest cowboy. Come say hi to me at the 2019 State Fair of Texas from Sept 27 – October 20 in Fair Park.
