Field Testing: The King Ranch® Cow Horse Boot

In 1853, Captain Richard King purchased a spring – fed oasis in the Wild Horse Desert of South Texas, sparking a legacy for generations to come of integrity, stewardship and innovation. King Ranch® now covers 825,000 acres in South Texas. The 165 year history of King Ranch® includes leading some of the first cattle drives north, development of the Santa Gertrudis and Santa Cruz breeds of cattle, breeding the finest quarter horses and producing champion Thoroughbreds – all under the iconic Running W brand.

Today King Ranch® is a major agribusiness with interests in cattle ranching, farming (citrus, cotton, grain, sugar cane, and turfgrass), recreational hunting and luxury retail goods.

King Ranch® continues to foster a culture of uncompromising quality, stewardship, and authenticity – a true testament to Captain King’s integrity and commitment to the land.

On King Ranch® the tradition of long days and hard work are evident. Ranch Family and employees, both now in their sixth generation, keep these traditions alive. After more than 165 years, cattle and quarter horses remain the backbone of King Ranch®. To test our performance cow horse boots, we teamed up with the hardworking Kineño vaqueros on the Ranch to showcase the durable features for a day’s work in the saddle.

Kineños are the employee families that traveled north from their home in northern Mexico in 1864 to work for and help Captain Richard King develop his Ranch. Now, after generations of dedication to the land, many descendants of the original families still work the land and take as much pride in the Ranch as the King Ranch® Family members. From the saddle on the backs of top quarter horses- the only breed of horse on the ranch- the cowboys manage over 30,000 head of cattle on the Ranch. The South Texas environment that is home to King Ranch® is one of the most rugged terrains for cattle ranching in the world. In response to their challenging environment, King Ranch® developed the first American breed of cattle, The Santa Gertrudis. If the boots can make it in this environment, they can make it anywhere.
