Three straight Gold Cup wins

In the span of a week and a half, Lucchese has played three high-intensity matches at The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup for the British Open — and won all of them.

The Gold Cup’s groups are based upon the polo teams’ results in the Queen’s Cup, which wrapped nearby in England in mid-June. Though Lucchese did not make it to the Queen's Cup Final, the team did impressively progress to the tournament's quarter finals. This strong performance in June meant Lucchese would be placed into Group A for the Gold Cup, which also features top-seeded Talandracas, King Power and Black Bears.

The exceedingly competitive Group A has proven itself a challenge the Lucchese foursome is well-equipped to meet. As of July 5th, Lucchese solidified a slot in the Gold Cup competition’s next stage — the quarter finals. One match remains in the league group (which can be viewed live at 8am CDT July 9th, thanks to pololine.tv) but no matter the outcome, Lucchese's position is guaranteed.

Patron John Muse says that even though Lucchese had a great campaign in the Queen’s Cup tournament, they conscientiously “regrouped to prepare for the Gold Cup and correct mistakes of our last two [Queen's Cup] games.” He counts “penalty shooting, better marking and eliminating unnecessary fouls” as the team’s points of focus, which has yielded great results — but not perfect ones. “We are playing well but have had one poor chukker in each match,” he explains. “The objective will be to play 6 great chukkers.”

Catch up by watching the first several matches in their full glory below, as well as a highlight reel featuring Nico Pieres. Stay tuned for up-to-the-minute coverage of the Gold Cup quarter finals.
