BrahmsMount antique-woven Blankets

Maker: BrahmsMount

Location: Freeport, Maine

Wares: Woven textiles

A mill buzzes with activity in Hallowell, Maine, where BrahmsMount blankets, throws, wraps and linens are woven on antique shuttle looms. The cotton, linen and wool products produced by dexterous local artisans have attracted attention from modern tastemakers like Martha Stewart and Apartment Therapy because of the company's signature designs, bridging the gap between contemporary and traditional aesthetics.

President David Kaufman bought the company in 2009 and still works closely with co-founders Claudia Brahms and Noel Mount, who began their journey as business partners in 1983.

“I just became enthralled with creating a beautiful tangible product. . .It was an emotional connection I can’t explain. There’s just something very comforting about surrounding yourself with all these products,” Kaufman told Maine Home + Design in 2011.

Fifty different artisans — some called “master weavers” — handle each blanket during production. All textiles are guaranteed to be made from fine natural fibers, creating “heirloom-quality products with a soft hand, flowing drape and an untreated clear finish.”

Most recently in 2013, BrahmsMount opened a flagship store in an 18th century building — a fitting location and way to celebrate the company’s 30th birthday.
